Should I Tip My Movers?

It is one of those social quirks that we just don’t know how to handle: should we tip movers when they help us with our moving? It is a question that Melbourne Master Movers has been asked numerous times and one we are happy to help you answer with an in-depth analysis.

Do I have to tip the movers?

Tipping is not mandatory in Australia, like it is in the US. While it is considered a custom norm to tip Americans on everything, this is not the custom in Australia. Therefore when it comes to tipping movers, you do not have to do so.

Would it be considered nice?

Yes, it would be be. Tipping is a sign that you are more than satisfied with the results that have been delivered to you. It reflects the high level of satisfaction you have with the job and the crew of movers will be greatly appreciated, especially considering it is a physically demanding job.

If so, how much should I tip?

The standard across the board within the moving industry is that the tipping point is about 15 to 20% of the total value of the job. Divide this amongst the team and that is what you will end up paying each person. If you consider other “super” heavy items, such as pianos, pool tables, marble tables, you might want to consider giving a little more, considering the extreme nature of those items.

Do I tip them at the end yes?

That is right. Why would you tip the movers before the job has been completed? Always tip the movers at the end of the job and once you are completely satisfied with the moving job.

And who I give the money to?

There is always a foreman that leads the charge of the crew, or if there is only one person for the job, just him. Handing the tip to the foreman will ease the burden on you, as he will spread them money around equally throughout the team.
